"This Canadian record of Venezuelan piano music from the 19th and 20th centuries is a real charmer full of sultry melody, swingy rhythm, and exotic atmosphere. Monique Duphil plays with lyrical directness and rhythmic elasticity, and the recording is suitably warm. For pure pleasure, this disc is tops."

ROMANTIC PIANO RECITAL
SCHUMANN Kreisleriana
CHOPIN Sonata in B Minor
Monique Duphil, piano |
“One hardly expects to hear something new in a performance of the oft-recorded Kreisleriana, but Duphil finds an original approach… There is no element of showiness or flamboyance in her technique, just solid accuracy and brilliance… There is a great deal of competition in the market…be assured that this fine pianist merits a place, and is well worth hearing.” —FANFARE May 2000 |

Shostakovich plays Shostakovich
Sonata Op. 40 for Cello & Piano Sonata Op. 134 for Violin & Piano Trio Op. 67 for violin cello & piano
David Oistrakh, violin Daniil Shafran, cello (cello sonata) Milos Sádlo, cello (piano trio) Dmitri Shostakovich, piano
This CD includes the first ever performance of the violin sonata just weeks after it was finished. This performance was in the music room of the Oistrakh home for a gathering of friends.. |
“Shafran and Shostakovich were both wonderful musicians…The cellist had a marvelous tone and an unerring sense of line that worked splendidly…The recording of the Violin Sonata with Oistrakh was made in 1968…it is a thrilling performance, with Oistrakh and the comoser building tremendous momentum in the second movement and playingwith hair-raising urgency in the central section of the final passacaglia. Here and in the wonderful 1947 performance of the Second Piano Trio, it is easy ot hear what an exceptional pianist the composer was.…he was capable of suddenly unleashing a surprisingly explosive power.… These recordings are required listening for all those interested in Shostakovich.”—FANFARE, November/2000 |

Felix Mendelssohn Duo Lowe Beaubien, violin and piano
Darren Lowe, violin and Suzanne Beaubien piano Laurier Chamber Orchestra, Paul Pulford, conductor
Sonata for Violin and Piano in F major Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings in D Minor Romance without Words/Kreisler |
“This CD features the inherent drama of hearing two technically adept virtuosos just fling themselves with glee at this difficult, showy writing. …everything he touches from the aggressive dotted rhythms of the sonata’s first movement to the nervously agitated finales to both works, brims over with excitement…Beaubien dazzles in the fastest scales and passagework, and they make a beautifully unified team in both works. My notes for the third movement of the sonata were a simple “Wow!” while for the concerto’s finale I managed “What a romp.” But it isn’t all speed and glitter; these artists are as playful and imaginative in the concert’s cadenza as I have heard, and the slow movements provide their share of tender relief. Even when compared to such a great performance of the concerto as Kremer/Argerich/Orpheus on DG this reading holds up, and indeed the recorded balances are superior.”—FANFARE, November/2000 |

T.O.C. says “Damn these guys are good. I’ve known The Romeros for over 35 years. Their quartet recordings are the standard every guitar quartet must live up to. The Canadian Guitar Quartet reaches their heights. To match the Romeros they will have to keep it up for another 20 years of recordings in this class, but what a great start! |
