“This CD features the inherent drama of hearing two technically adept virtuosos just fling themselves with glee at this difficult, showy writing. …everything he touches from the aggressive dotted rhythms of the sonata’s first movement to the nervously agitated finales to both works, brims over with excitement…Beaubien dazzles in the fastest scales and passage work, and they make a beautifully unified team in both works. My notes for the third movement of the sonata were a simple “Wow!” while for the concerto’s finale I managed “What a romp.” But it isn’t all speed and glitter; these artists are as playful and imaginative in the concerto’s cadenza as I have heard, and the slow movements provide their share of tender relief. Even when compared to such a great performance of the concerto as Kremer/Argerich/Orpheus on DG this reading holds up, and indeed the recorded balances are superior.”—FANFARE, November/2000 |
