A few months ago. “The D. Shafran Memorial Fund” was founded by Steven Isserlis, a close friend of our family. He wanted to help our family collect money for a headstone on my father’s grave. My father’s grave now has a headstone. My father’s name has been famous around the world for a long time. Daniil Shafran was considered a living legend when he left us. Today he is considered as one of the all time great masters of the cello on a level with Casals and Cassado. I would like a book about him to be published. Our family believes that because of his role not only an outstanding cellist, but also as a person of great moral character and civic virtue, a book about his likfe would benefit todays musical world. Such a book published in various languages and read by peoples around the world would be an even better memorial even more than the headstone at the graveyard. The book is being written by two authors; Gennady Cypin and Michael Fikhtengolts (the grandson of the well known Russian violinist). It is almost done. I have an agreement about its translation into English. Publishing both in Russia and abroad takes a lot of money. The amount collected by “The D. Shafran Memorial Fund” is not quite enough. I would like to keep Daniil’s name alive for everybody as long as people love and listen to cello music. There could be memorial concerts, grants etc. Unfortunately the main question always comes back to money. I am afraid these are just my dreams. One of these dreams has already come true the book about Daniil Shafran. I want to do this for the memory of my father’s name. I hope for your understanding and assistance. It would be wonderful if music-lovers around the world were willing to pay tribute to this much-loved and much-missed musician by making contributions to this project.
